Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Assistant Adjutant General for Operations at Dubai Police says the authorities are currently studying a proposal to cancel the driving licenses of motorists who exceed speed limits, specifically those doing over 200km per hour.
The aim is to reduce deaths on the roads, Maj. Gen. Zafeen said at a press meet where he revealed Dubai Police traffic statistics.
He stressed that so far, this year, there has been an increase in the number of deaths on roads - 154 - when compared to the same period last year – 147. March recorded the highest traffic mortality rates - 21 deaths.
Major General Zafeen pointed out that the number of violations of speed limit, above 200kmph, in 2013 were 761, with Emirates Road recording 385 of these violations – the highest.
The fastest speed recorded on Emirates Road was 254 kmph.
Sheikh Zayed Road saw 187 violations and a top speed of 265kmph, followed by Dubai-Al Ain Road with 62 and a top speed of 246kmph.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road had 42 offenses and top speed of 251kmph; Al Khail Road 25 violations and a top speed 245kmph.
Jumeirah road also recorded a speed violation of 217kmph. Zafeen said that excessive speed caused 80 per cent of traffic accidents.
