Saudi newspapers published what they said was the first lamp to be installed in the Grand Mosque, home to Islam’s holiest shrine.

‘Ajel’ and other papers in the Gulf Kingdom said the lamp dates back to 112 years when Sultan Abdul Hamid was in power in Turkey during the Ottoman rule of the Arab world.

The report showed that the lamp ushered in the introduction of electricity to the Arabian Peninsula, which comprises Saudi Arabia, the UAE, other Gulf countries and Yemen.

The Grand Mosque, or Masjid Al Haram, is the largest mosque in the world and surrounds Islam’s holiest place, the Kaaba.

It is based in the Western town of Makkah and covers an area of around 356,800 square metres.
