A video game addict rang up 999 after his Grand Theft Auto character had been shot dead in the make-believe world of gaming.

David Helens dialed 999 to inform the emergency services that ‘Max’ had been shot in the chest and was slipping in and out of consciousness and soon died, reports Metro.

The call attendant told the court that Helens’ behaviour seemed like a desperate call for help and she felt concerned.

In the call that lasted for 12 minutes, Helens informed about the gun shot and an ambulance was soon dispatched to his residence.

He later called up the emergency services to say that 'Max' had died and a second ambulance was sent out as “this information had to be treated as a possible cardiac arrest,” the phone attendant told the court.

Helens said that too had been attacked by a third person and feigned screaming and shouting, which made the phone operator very concerned.

When questioned, Helens admitted he was guilty of making the prank call.

He has been sentenced to a 12-month community order where he has to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and will be subject to a supervision requirement of 18 months.
