His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, last night attended part of the cultural evening "Verses from the heart of the desert" organised by the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, in association with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and Khaleej Adventures in the desert near Al Aweer, Dubai.

A number of intellectuals and poets from the UAE and other countries attended the evening, as well as a large number of visitors, both nationals and other residents.

Khalifa Saeed Suliman, Director General of the Protocol and Guesthouse Department, attended the evening with Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office, and a number of Arab and foreign media persons.

The poets and guests were welcomed by Sheikh Mohammed, who ordered that the event should be held annually to maintain and strengthen the cultural connections between UAE poets and authors and their Western peers, to allow for an introduction to each other's culture that reflects the civilisation, the heritage and the identity of the people. Poetry in itself, he noted, is an essential component of culture and a form of free art blossoming from the creativity of the talented individual.

The Vice President also lauded the project of hosting and organising such events in the UAE as a constant reminder to its people and the rest of the world of local culture and as an incentive to guard and protect the national identity, along with spreading morality and humanity among society and its people.
