Mohammed attends Business Awards

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attended the 18th Business Excellence Awards ceremony hosted by the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) to honour businesses for their outstanding commitment to pursuing excellence in 2012.

The Business Excellence Awards includes the Dubai Quality Award (DQA), Dubai Human Development Award (DHDA) and the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme (DSES). Sami Al Qamzi, Director General of DED, while addressing the ceremony said Sheikh Mohammed has always underlined the importance of excellence and performance evaluation as key to success.

"His Highness said and I quote: ‘Regular performance assessment is essential as it improves our vision, develops our efficiency, corrects our mistakes, and gives us a sustained impetus for development.’ That argument gives us the motivation to exert more efforts to reach quality and excellence in the various fields," Al Qamzi said.

The winners of the current cycle of Dubai Quality Award were honoured in three categories - the Dubai Quality Gold Award, Dubai Quality Award and the Dubai Quality Appreciation Award (DQAA).

Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, presented the Dubai Quality Gold Award to Hilton Dubai Jumeirah (Tourism sector) and Union National Bank (Finance sector) and the Dubai Quality Award to Danube Building Materials FZCO (Trade), Emirates Gas (Manufacturing) and UAE Exchange Centre (Finance).

The Dubai Quality Appreciation Award (DQAA) was also presented by Sheikh Maktoum. Carea Air Conditioning Services, Al Tanmya Services, World Security, Shift Leasing Rent A Car, VFS GCC (all from the Service sector), Enoc Lubricants & Grease Manufacturing Plant, Dubai Refreshments (both from Manufacturing), Aldo Business Concepts by Apparel Group (Retail), and RAK Hospital, Prime Healthcare Group and Abu Dhabi Health Services Co. – SEHA from the Healthcare sector were the DQAA winners.

The Ministry of Education won the Dubai Human Development Appreciation Award (DHDAA) and Dubai Islamic Bank won the Dubai Human Development Award for their focus on developing UAE national talent. The awards were presented by Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.

Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed also honoured 14 leading retailers selected this year as part of the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme, intended to raise the standards of customer service and business ethics and to set new levels of excellence in the UAE’s fast-expanding retail sector.

Plug Ins Electronics – Dubai Mall (Electronics), Dnata Travel Services – Bur Juman (Travel services), Springfield – Safeer Mall Ras Al Khaimah (Apparel), Naturalizer – Mall of Emirates, Nine West – Al Ain Mall (both Footwear), Grand Stores Digital – Mirdif City Centre (General retail), Pure Gold Jewellers (Jewellery) and Al Jaber Optical – Bawadi Mall (Opticals) were named under the ‘Best Service Performance Outlet’ scheme of DSES.

The ‘Best Service Performance Brand’ scheme of DSES comprised THE FACE SHOP (Small business), Grand Stores (Medium business), Nine West (Large business) and UAE Exchange Centre (Special business) along with Pure Gold Jewellers and Al Jaber Optical in the newly added ‘Outstanding Business’ sub-category.

Al Qamzi said: "For the next cycle, DED has announced a new SME (small and medium enterprise) Award in view of the growing importance of the expanding SME sector to the local economy, especially in integrating excellence as a critical component of economic activity. The new award will be implemented in partnership with Dubai SME, the DED agency mandated to develop the SME sector".

Mohammed Bushanain, Executive Director, Corporate Quality & Management Excellence, DED, said: "A Code of Conduct for shopping malls will also be launched as part of DSES this year under a DED initiative to enhance the customer experience in the local retail sector. Another addition this year will be the ‘Bareeq Excellence Award’ jointly instituted by the Business Excellence Department in DED and the Dubai Municipality to encourage and reinforce best practices in the jewellery sector".

The DHDA will also be expanded with a new Government HR (human resources) Award, first of its kind in the region, covering all categories employees including UAE nationals. The award criteria will be based on the latest EFQM Excellence Model and the RADAR methodology of assessment.

Mohammed bin Rashid receives Grand Imam of Al-Azhar

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has received at the new headquarter of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyib.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed welcomed and congratulated the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar on the occasion of winning of the Cultural Personality of the Year Award of the 7th edition of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.

He also wished him success in his efforts to serve Islam and the Muslims, stressing UAE's support for Al A-azhar and its holy message in promoting the concept, culture and principles of moderate Islam as well as its openness to all religions, cultures and norms.

Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, attended the meeting.

The vice president highlighted the vital role Al-Azhar plays in teaching Humanities, other Islamic specialisations in addition to Arabic, the language of the Holy Quran, adding that the Emiratis who have graduated from Al-Azhar and are now occupying senior positions in various government and private institutions in the country.

For his part, Dr. Al-Tayyib hailed the efforts of the UAE's leadership and its keenness to build humanitarian, cultural and social bridges between the people of the UAE and other peoples, noting to the cultural and social diversity of the UAE community which represents a global model of co-existence among different cultures and religions.

He also lauded the initiative of Sheikh Mohammed, the sponsor and founder of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, the most widely spread and valued Award to young Quran memorisers.

Among those who attended the meeting were Sheikh Majed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Dr. Hadef bin Jowan Al Dhahiri, Minister of Justice, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Director-General of the Court of His Highness The Ruler of Dubai,  Ibrahim Mohammed Bumelha, Advsior to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid for Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Hamad Al Shaibani, Director- General of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai (IACAD), and a number of officials and members of the delegation accompanying the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.
