Dubai plans boat market and smart city

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,  paid an inspection visit to the headquarters of Dubai Municipality on Monday morning. Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied by  Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai. During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed reviewed Dubai Municipality’s new developmental, services and recreational projects that the emirate is implementing at a total cost exceeding Dh20 million.

During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed was also accompanied by Director General of His Highness the Ruler's Court Lt. General Musabbah Rashid Al Fattan and Director General of Dubai Protocol Department Khalifa Saeed Suleiman.

Director General of Dubai Municipality Hussain Nasser Lootah and his team briefed Sheikh Mohammed on the latest projects that the Dubai Municipality is planning to kick off .

Among those projects is the smart city, a residential project for UAE nationals that will be built near Al Aweer Roundabout.

During his presentation before Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Dawood Al Hajeri, Manager of Planning and Engineering Sector Department, asserted that the smart city will be completely sustainable and will produce 200 megawatts from the solar panels that will cover the roofs of the houses and other buildings.

According to Sheikh Mohammed’s directives, the work on the project will start immediately and is expected to finish by 2020. The smart city will accommodate about 160,000 people over a total area of 14,000 acres of land. Surrounded by a green belt, a development will be fully sustainable and self sufficient in terms of resources, transport and energy. The city will recycle over 40,000 cubic metres of water.

Abdul Hakeem Malik from the Planning and Engineering Sector presented the smart-address project that will provide a digital infrastructure rather than the traditional naming system. The new system will be launched next May and it will be the first of its kind in the Arab world.

Mohamed Al Mashroom, also from the Planning and Engineering Sector,  presented the Dubai Boats Market  project that is considered the first of its kind in the Middle East. Once completed, the project will be an attraction for marine sports enthusiasts and will contribute in converting Dubai to a global hub for manufacturing and selling boats and fishing equipment and will attracts investments to the industry.

The Dubai Boats Market will be located at Al Barsha South and covers 35 acres with a 10 acre man-made lake.

Mohammed receives a delegation from Unesco’s WHC

On the sideline of his visit on Monday morning to the Dubai Municipality, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid met a delegation from the Unesco’s World Heritage Committee (WHC). The delegation is visiting the UAE to get acquainted with the Dubai Creek  as a natural and cultural heritage site.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, iSheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed  welcomed the delegation. Sheikh offered his appreciation to the World Heritage Committee’s efforts to list Dubai Creek in the Unesco World Heritage Sites. Sheikh Mohammed expressed his confidence in the team’s vision that is composed of experts and scholars capable of taking the right decision in the matter.

Sheikh Mohammed was also accompanied by Director General of His Highness the Ruler's Court Lt. General Musabbah Rashid Al Fattan, Director General of Dubai Municipality Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Protocol Department Khalifa Saeed Suleiman and number of Dubai Municipality's senior staff.

Appointments to Expo 2020 Preparatory Committee

In his capacity as Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE, has issued Decree No.14 of 2014 appointing Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon bin Mohammed Al Nahyan and Khalid Ghanim Al Ghaith to the "Expo 2020 Preparatory Committee".

The decree is active from the date of issuance and shall be published in the Official Gazette.

In January, Sheikh Mohammed had issued a decree on the formation of "Expo 2020 Preparatory Committee" under supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, and chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.

Pursuant to that decree, Members of the Committee include Director General of the Ruler's Court Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani as vice chairman, Minister of State Reem Al Hashimy, Chief Commander of Dubai Police, Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Director General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Road and Transport Authority Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation Khalifa Suhail Al Zaffin, Director General of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre Helal Saeed Al Marri.

The committee will set the required strategies and plans to organise and prepare for hosting the world’s biggest exhibition that continue for six months in Dubai. The committee will also evaluate the suitability and efficiency of Dubai’s infrastructure, including touristic, and transport facilities. The committee will also determine the emirate’s technical, security and economic requirements to present the best episode ever of the international event since its inauguration in 1850.

The committee’s specialty also includes defining the programmes, activities and events that will be held on the margin of Expo 2020, supervising consolidated efforts to promote the mega event and its sidelines activities locally, regionally and internationally.

The committee will regularly report to the Ruler of Dubai to brief him on the progress made on underway preparations, in addition to suggestions, to insure the success of the exhibition in its first appearance in a vast region inhibited by almost two billion people.
