Another feather in UAE's cap: Hamdan

The UAE was crowned champion of the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France, and this victory will be added to its shining record of equestrian achievements, Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said.

Sheikh Hamdan made the remarks upon his return home today with the individual gold medal in the (WEG) in Normandy, France, after being crowned winner at the world's largest equestrian gathering.

Sheikh Hamdan was given a hero's welcome by a group of Sheikhs, top officials, sports leaders and a large crowd of fans led by Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Emirates Group, Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Hasher Al Maktoum, and Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Deputy Chairman of National Olympic Committee. Earlier, Sheikh Hamdan, winner of individual gold medal in the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France, attended the closing ceremony of the biggest equestrian event in the world.

During the event, Sheikh Hamdan was crowned champion after finishing first in a field of 173 riders from 47 nations.

The WEG's higher organising committee congratulated Sheikh Hamdan for completing the gruelling, 160-kilometre race in 8 hours, 8 minutes and 28 seconds. Sheikh Hamdan dominated the race from start to finish, riding mare ‘Yamamah’ to first-place in every single phase and winning the gold with ease.

On this historic, sport achievement, Sheikh Hamdan dedicated the landmark equestrian victory to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the UAE people. "The UAE lead in the international equestrian championship is a source of pride to all Arabs and not to the UAE alone,'' Sheikh Hamdan said.

The ceremony was also attended by Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, CEO of Meydan, endurance race enthusiasts and fans.

Celebrated every four years, the World Equestrian Games are undoubtedly the biggest equestrian event in the world.
