The Women and child Protection Wing at the Department of Human Rights, Dubai Police, has helped solve numerous cases since it was established in 2012.

From taking action against irresponsible men to intervening in domestic abuse, the department has ensured justice to several women.

According to a report in Al Bayan, the department helped an elderly woman who demanded that her abandoned grandson was taken care of by his father.

Explaining the case, Brigadier Dr Mohammed Al Murr, Director, Department of Human Rights, Dubai Police, said, after the boy’s parents were divorced, his mother left the country as his father was responsible for his custody.

However, the man married again and sent the boy to his mother [the boy’s paternal grandmother].

The elderly woman did take care of the child for some time, but she could not carry on as she had no financial support and her health was deteriorating.

So she approached the Women and Child Protection Wing at the Department of Human Rights and presented her case.

The officials summoned the man and informed him of legal action if he evades the responsibility of his son.

The man, ultimately, signed a pledge taking responsibility of his child, said Brigadier Dr Al Murr.

Similarly, the department has played a vital role in solving family disputes.

In one particular case, a woman filed a complaint against her husband and her mother-in-law for physically assaulting her.

One of the officials visited her home and spoke to the family members and helped resolve her issue, said Brigadier Dr Al Murr.

The department has so far received 454 cases since its establishment in May 2012.

Major Shaheen Al Mazmi, Director, Administration of Women and Child Protection, said so far the department has helped solve 174 cases. The report said 223 cases were on social support and family problems; 130 cases were violence related and 48 cases were provided with legal consultants.
