Housemaid drugs employers, empties house

An apparently wealthy Asian family in Dubai advertised online for a housemaid and a few days later, they hired one without evening asking where she had come from.

A week later, they paid the price when the Asian maid drugged them with the help of an accomplice and emptied their house of all jewellery and electronic items.

Police later arrested the maid and her partner, but also blamed the employers for failing to enquire about the maid and whether she is staying legally in the UAE.

“They gave her a job without enquiring about her legal status in the UAE. They did not ask for her ID and just had her first name which turned out to be a fake,” said Major General Khalil Al Mansoori, director of Dubai’s CID.

“I again call on all residents not to hire maids without checking their status and ID.

“I am surprised that some residents, mainly wealthy people, recruit such persons just because they accept lower wages and can be easily recruited.”

CID officials said the Asian employer, his wife and 10-year-old daughter were having tea at night when they fell fast asleep.

When they woke up on the next day, they were shocked to find that all their valuable electronic items and jewelry have gone along with the 35-year-old maid.

Extensive investigation later led the police to know that the fleeing housemaid had moved to work for another family.

“The new family was simply another victim,” said Lt Colonel Saeed Al Ayali, criminal investigation chief at the CID.
He said the maid confessed to having drugged the first family, using a substance brought to her by her accomplice - a 36-year-old jobless Asian man.

“Doctors described it as a dangerous substance. It is in the form of yellow tablets which were ground and used by the maid as a powder in that family’s tea," Ayali said.

The maid’s accomplice was also arrested and were both charged with robbery and endangering human lives, adding that the family also faces charges of illegal hiring.
