A 41-year old Indian cook has been lying in a paralysed state at Al Rashid Hospital for almost five months now, after he was hit by a pick-up van in Bur Dubai, while crossing the Al Musalla Road.

Saidutty, who worked for Ravi Restaurant in Al Ain, was in Bur Dubai to make some purchases for his first vacation to India. The father of five received severe head injuries when a pick-up van hit him, leading to hospitalisation and an emergency surgery of the skull. He is yet to regain consciousness.

“Doctors at the Al Rashid Hospital are waiting for a major skull surgery, which is possible only after he becomes stable and starts eating food on his own.

Currently he is being fed through a pipe and is mostly in a state of trauma,” said Hassan Chaliyam, a volunteer of Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC), which is overseeing his treatment.

“We have brought his brother from India to take care of the bedridden patient and the family is keen to repatriate the patient for further treatment. He does not have insurance cover, and we don’t know how much his hospital bill will be,” he added.

He cannot speak, move his limbs or consume food on his own, and has been lying in the same state for nearly five months, one and half months in the Intensive Care Unit and now in the observation ward.

“He needs an expensive skull surgery to return to normal life. The KMCC is making an appeal to the community to help for his surgery,” he said, adding that legal proceedings are ongoing to claim money from the pick-up van’s insurance firm for his treatment.
