We’ve heard of wonder drugs to boost the immune system for weight loss or diminish wrinkles on our face. This time, scientists claim to that a herb, Rhodiola, can protect us from the adverse effects of biochemical warfare.

Indian scientists say this ‘wonder herb’ that can not only regulate the immune system but also protect you from radioactivity.

The wonder herb grows in the high hostile peaks of the Himalayas, where sustaining life is a challenge in itself.

R B Srivastava, Director, Defence Institute of High Altitude Research in India, says the herb is a complete wonder.

The plant has “immunomodulatory (enhancing immune), adaptogenic (adapting to difficult climatic condition) and radio-protecting abilities due to presence of secondary metabolites and phytoactive compounds,” he told the IANS news agency.

Research on the Rhodiola has been going on for more than a decade and scientists have found that it lessens the effects of gamma radiation used in bombs.

Results of the research so far have been promising, and have led India’s leading scientists to wonder if it is the end to the quest for ‘Sanjeevani’, the mythical herb mentioned in Indian mythology.

Locally known as ‘Solo’ in Ladakh, the qualities of Rhodiola were largely unknown so far. The leafy parts of the plant were used as vegetable by locals.

However, the Leh-based Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (Dihar) is said to be exploring the therapeutic values of the herb.
It’s said that the plant also has anti-depression properties as well.

Appetiser properties are also attributed to it memory enhancement powers, rapid recovery from heavy workouts and cardiac stress reduction.
This herb is not just restricted to the Himalayas and has been found in the US and China as well.

These countries are doing their own research on the Rhodiola.
