There have been 39,527 violations involving the use of mobile phones while driving in the first nine months of 2011, according to statistics released by the General Department of Traffic Police, Dubai.

Of these 7,205 offenders were stopped on the spot and fined, while 32,322 were fined in absentia.

According to traffic laws a driver who uses a mobile phone while driving is fined Dh200 and gets four black points against him/her in his traffic file.

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director, Dubai Traffic Police, disclosed that Indians topped the list perpetrators of this offence.

However, he did add that this is because they are the largest community in the emirate.

Emaratis are next, followed by Pakistanis, Arabs, Europeans and Americans.

Maj. Gen Al Zafeen said: "Using a mobile phone while driving is one of the factors for accidents and must be associated with serious offenses like speeding.”

"There is a direct correlation between the use of mobiles while driving and the probability of accidents. This increases on highways like Emirates Road, where there are heavy vehicles.”
