Images of a woman from Kerala, India, giving birth to triplets have gone viral. And the suspects are three doctors - including gynaecologists and an anaesthetist - who performed the C-Section on her at a government hospital in Kannur district.

The woman and her family were shocked to see her labour room images on TV screens as local channels picked up the story after it went viral on social media app WhatsApp. They have filed a case and the suspects are allegedly on the run to evade arrest.

Though the incident happened on July 18, 2014, the images went viral only recently and have once again triggered debates on media ethics and called for stringent measures to control the increasing numbers of cyber-crimes in the state. Women’s rights groups have been staging protests putting pressure on officials to nab the suspects.

Dr K J Reena, District Medical Officer, Kannur, conducted an internal inquiry and sought the help of cyber cops. Currently, investigations by Cyber Cell and Kerala Police are on to determine who among the three doctors filmed the woman without her permission.

The doctors, meanwhile, have been suspended from service. According to sources, the three medics sought anticipatory bail, which was rejected by the Kerala High Court. They face criminal charges under Indian Penal Code 354 and Section 66E of Information Technology Act.

“This is unacceptable. Such doctors should be debarred by the Medical Council of India. Worldwide we doctors follow the same medical ethics and we have a Hypocrites oath,” said an Indian doctor in Dubai.

“Medical practice is a respectable and holy job. Such acts should not be repeated,” said Ramesh Payyannur, executive committee member of Payyannur Sauhruda Vedi, an association of expatriates from Payyannur in Dubai.

It may be recalled that a film actress, Shweta Menon had her delivery filmed for a movie, but that was done after she and her husband gave them the permission.

Cyber-crimes in Kerala are on the rise, according to the Kerala State Home Department. In the last three years, 652 cases of misuse of social networking and internet were reported in the state and more than 900 cases of mobile phone crimes were reported.
