Call it the summer silence in the local job market.

Every year, a good proportion of the UAE’s expat and local population takes advantage of school holidays and slower business months to take a break during this period.

In response, several companies mothball their hiring plans only to start in right earnest after the summer months whereas some hiring managers remain indecisive, whether to hire or not, limiting the options of jobseekers in the country.

The trend has been similar this year too.

According to a recent report by recruiting company Morgan McKinley, companies in the UAE have been hiring less in recent months.

The recruitment firm’s data shows that professional hiring fell by 1 per cent in the second quarter to 8,109 compared with 8,213 in the first three months of the year.

This was partly on the back of lower global crude prices, but also because more employment opportunities opened up in talent-source markets like the UK, Ireland, America, Australia and Asia.

Nevertheless, some sectors are bucking this trend by continuing to hire in the country to meet their expansion plans.

One such sector is the UAE’s bustling hospitality industry.

Several hotel chains in the country are launching new hotels and thus looking to add to their headcount, with vacancies being advertised in virtually all the departments.

Previous reports predict that supply of hotel rooms in Dubai is set to double between 2012 and 2020, which may mean pressure on the occupancy rates and lower revenue per available room (RevPAR), but will definitely mean more jobs up for grabs.

For those of you on the lookout for a job in the UAE’s hospitality sector, here are three large hotel chains that have a number of current vacancies listed.

Jumeirah Group

The hospitality group is looking for candidates across its departments and portfolio of properties and has a total of 240 jobs listed on its website.

The company is looking to place professionals in its Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Madinat Jumeirah Resort, Creekside Hotel, Emirates Towers, Etihad Towers and Burj Al Arab in the UAE.

Several vacancies have also been posted for its international properties as well.

The company is in need of professionals in its sales & marketing, human resources, transportation rooms division, sports & leisure, food & beverage, conference & events, executive management, engineering, revenue management and many more divisions.

Hilton Group

The hotelier is targeting expansion in the UAE. The company has 67 hotels in the Middle East and Africa pipeline, of which seven are in the UAE, which are expected to open within the next 18-24 months, by 2017.

The company is also considering bringing hotels to Dubai World Central (DWC), where the World Expo 2020 will take place.

The brands Hilton Garden Inn Bur Dubai and Hampton by Hilton Dubai Al Mina, expected to open in early 2019, will add 500 additional rooms in total to Dubai's mid-market inventory, requiring staff in all areas.

Currently, over 150 jobs have been advertised by the company. Positions have opened up in its properties like DoubleTree, Hilton, Waldorf-Astoria, Hilton Garden Inn and Conrad, among others.

Professionals are needed in their communications and public relations department; in sales; guest services/operations; food & beverage; housekeeping and laundry; spa, golf, health club and recreation; revenue management; culinary, human resources & training; procurement and purchasing; engineering, maintenance and facilities as well as several others.

Hyatt Group

The Hyatt brand is also looking to hire for its various hotels in the UAE. Over 40 jobs have been advertised for its properties in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Positions of income & cost auditor, nail technician, bell attendant, events planning manager, spa therapist, events sales executive, operations trainee, outlet hostess, guest service officer, sales manager, immigration manager, revenue manager, waiter/waitress are among several that need to be filled up.
