Man faces execution for murder

An Asian expatriate could be executed for murdering an Emirati man nearly seven years ago, after the victim’s relatives refused to pardon him, the Arabic language daily Al Bayan reported on Monday.

A criminal court in Abu Dhabi found the unnamed defendant guilty of murdering the Emirati in Al Ain and decided to present his case to the UAE President for endorsement of the execution sentence, the paper said.

His lawyer Hassan Ismail said the victim’s embracement of Islam while in jail would not affect the court’s sentence on the grounds Moslems and non-Moslems would require pardon by the victim’s relatives to avoid execution.

According to Al Bayan, the defendant stabbed the Emirati seven times after he caught him with his housemaid at her room in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain.

The paper said relatives of the victims had turned down mediation efforts over the past few years to persuade them to pardon the killer and accept diya (blood money) after he embraced Islam.
