Man fined for beating wife found dead at home

A 26-year-old husband who was convicted of hitting his wife and fined Dh2,000 by a Dubai court was found dead at his home, prompting his lawyer to request the closure of the case, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

A court of first instance in the emirate had found the husband guilty of slapping his wife in the face and hitting her on the leg, prompting the man to appeal.

The court of appeals upheld the sentence and fined the husband Dh2,000 despite his claims that she attacked him while driving her back home from her family’s house.

The court dismissed the claims submitted by the defendant’s lawyer Faisal Al Zarouni after a medical report confirmed the husband assaulted his wife and caused bruises to her face and body.

Issuing the sentence, the judge said he decided to have mercy for the defendant and punish him only with a fine, taking into consideration that the couple has three children.

“We are taking legal procedures to cancel the sentence and close the case after my client was found dead at his home,” Zarouni told the semi-official daily ‘Al Ittihad’, which did not give details of the defendant’s death.
