Foggy conditions this morning led to major traffic jams across Dubai as vehicles had no choice but to drive slowly.

Visibility was down to as low as 10 metres in some areas and by 8am Sheikh Zayed Road was already choc-a-bloc, with traffic backing up all the way into Karama and Bur Dubai.

Commuters who took to the roads around 6.30am to commence their long drive to Abu Dhabi, found themselves still stuck at Jebel Ali an hour later.

“I left home at 6.30am this morning, anticipating the traffic all the way to Abu Dhabi; but even I didn’t expect that things would be this bad that my commute from Tecom to just Jebel Ali would take one hour,” exclaimed Deepak Kapadia, a real estate agent.

“I have an early morning meeting, but frankly, I would rather be late than no reach there at all.”

Jhanavi Suresh, a budget manager who lives in Bur Dubai and commutes to Abu Dhabi every day, said: “Two hours in the traffic since morning and I have barely reached Yas Island. On mornings like these, it’s so much more beneficial for us to work from home than brave this traffic and endanger our lives.”

Visibility was also very poor for motorists driving in from the northern Emirates -- Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah -- to Dubai.

"I started normally from Ajman, but from the point where I entered the Emirates Road till the second bridge, traffic was almost bumper to bumper. Normally this is a congested area because many vehicles try to take the exit to the bypassroad, but today the fog added to the congestion," said a motorist.

At the time of filing this report, no accidents were reported yet.

Dubai Traffic Police have already urged motorists to be very careful while driving in fog.
