Most Saudi men marry for luxury not love and this is one of the main reasons for the high divorce rates in the Gulf Kingdom, according to a Saudi medical expert.

Women in the oil superpower spend large sums of money on cosmetics, says Dr Saleh Al Khalaf, psychology professor at the Saudi Al Qasseem University.

“Women in Saudi Arabia have been brought up as a source of satisfaction for men. Hence, we see them struggling to be beautiful and attractive and this has given rise to beauty clinics and centres,” he said, citing a recent study showing Gulf women spend in excess of SR7 billion (Dh7 billion) on make-up and cosmetic operations.

“Men in Saudi Arabia marry for luxury not love or real marriage.

“Hence, we find that most of the divorce cases happen within the first year of marriage while a large number of the married couple decide to split after 20 years or so.”

According to a recent official report, Saudi Arabia has one of the world’s highest divorce rates, with an average 66 divorce cases a day.

The report attributed the high divorce rate to the wrong choice of the spouse, the educational gap, differences in habits and poor understanding of marital duties.
