Now get entertained by a robot

A humanoid service robot is cheering visitors and exhibitors to the international defence exhibition progressing at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Complex. About 20 such robots will be distributed initially to different Middle Eastern countries including the UAE, an official from PAL Robotics said.

PAL Robotics, a Spanish company from Barcelona engaged in humanoid robotic research and development and the PAL Group of Abu Dhabi will commercially manufacture Reem robots, currently demonstrated at the Idex Abu Dhabi Defence exhibition.  Humonoid robot is a robot with hand, head, legs and other human features that can interact with the environment and do some services.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Jan Jonckheere, Business Development Manager, PAL Robotics said the company has got concrete orders to supply 20 Reem  service robots in the Middle East and the commercial production of the human robots is under consideration. “Its name is Reem, how may I help you. After many years of study and research that produced many prototypes, the company is now commencing the launch and production of robots on a commercial basis. We have a team of 24 people of different nationalities, mostly engineers in the field of mechanics, electronics and software.” He said Reem, the humanoid service robot can be used for several purposes. With an autonomous navigation system, a user friendly touch screen, voice and face recognition system, Reem can find its way in various surroundings and help or entertain people in most public environments. Three versions of the robots are available.

“Besides helping you as a guide or amusing you as an entertainer, Reem can also transport small packages and its dynamic information point can be used with a wide variety of multimedia applications. It can display an interactive map of the surrounding area, call up a variety of information –order food from nearby restaurants, airlines travel time etc and offer tele assistance via video conference,” he added. The Reem robot moving around the wide exhibition hall is amusing visitors and exhibitors alike.

The robot contains an advanced 12 inch multimedia touchscreen with a variety of applications. There is a language option, advertising display and the touch screen content can be changed to suit different events. It is a 1.65 meter high humanoid robot with 22 degrees of freedom. The upper part of the robot comprises of a torso with a touch screen, two motorized arms, which give it a high degree of expression and a motorized head.

The robot has a mobile base with wheels, allowing it move at 5 km per hour. It contains a small platform to transport objects like a trolley. A lithium battery to charge the robot will last eight hours and it can move around without cables or human support. A complete range of sensors cameras, ultrasonic and lasers ensures the robot to find its way safely avoiding obstacles and people.PAL Robotics builds robot parts, personalized robot platforms and robots for different service industries.
