Official to be lashed for defaming employee

A Saudi court ordered a senior municipality official lashed 10 times after he was found guilty of defaming an employee at his department.

The employee sued the official in the secretariat (municipality) in the Western Saudi town of Makkah after he accused him of taking bribe in front of other employees.

The Arabic language daily Almadina said the official confessed to the charges after several employees testified against him in court.

"Officials tried to resolve the problem outside court but the employee refused…the court sentenced the official to 10 lashes and made him pledge not to repeat the offence," the paper said without identifying the official.
