Abu Dhabi had more than 783,000 cars at the end of 2011, almost a car for every three people, according to the emirate’s traffic police.

The figure is nearly 12 per cent higher than the number of cars registered in the emirate at the end of 2010, the statistics showed.

At the end of 2011, a total 783,180 vehicles were registered by the traffic police in the emirate compared with 698,070 at the end of 2010.

The figures, published by the semi official daily Alittihad, showed nearly 686,000 cars at the end of 2011 were light vehicles while they included about 43,000 heavy duty trucks, 16,000 large busses, 1,336 mini buses, and more than 40,000 bulldozers and other light and heavy machines.

Abu Dhabi, the main oil producer in the UAE, has a population of around two million and is one of the richest cities in the world.
