Paedophile tourism: Lanka to go Thai, Cambodia way… and ban entry to suspects

Published

COLOMBO: The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has taken steps to implement a secure plan to avoid the arrival of foreigners posing tourists and who were involved in child abuse in their countries, ‘Dinamina’ newspaper reported yesterday (25).

A special request has been made by NCPA from countries including USA, Norway, New Zealand, England and Germany, and UNICEF too, to provide information on such persons.

Chairperson of the NCPA Attorney Anoma Dissanayaka said that persons who were involved in child abuse in other countries visit Sri Lanka as tourists and engage in child abuse and other acts using children in various illegal businesses, and therefore they have decided to obtain the assistance from the international community.

Dissanayake further said that such information provided by those countries and the UNICEF will be helpful to identify those child abusers from any country of the world and take proper legal action.

She said that this plan will be strictly implemented against those foreigners, suspected to be child abusers, who pose as tourists.

According to information received from Thailand and Cambodia, these countries have been successfully implementing legal measures and if we also could implement such legal measures, we too could manage to avoid child abusers entering the country, she stressed.

Chairperson reiterated that the NCPA will never allow our children to be victims of such culprits and if there are shortcomings in the legal structure, they would explore the possibility of introducing new laws for the protection of the children.
