Cyclone Nilofar: Pakistan issues emergency checklist

Tropical Cyclone Nilofar in the Arabian Sea. India on Wenesday was shifting thousands of people out of the way of Cyclone Nilofar due to hit the region this weekend, while Pakistan geared up for potential large-scale evacuations. Nilofar - listed as a "very severe cyclonic storm" by Indian weather officials - is barrelling across the Arabian Sea packing winds of up to 220 kilometres (132 miles) an hour. (AFP)

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority has issued a checklist to ensure emergency procedures are in place over the next 48 hours, which include precautionary evacuations to higher grounds of people living in coastal areas / low lying areas near the coast or residing in huts, refraining people from swimming in the sea, warning and forecasts be issued to people, ships, ports etc. and rescue agencies be placed on alert in the likely areas of impact.

Arrangements for relief camps in respective areas are also being made functional, while emergency Operation Centres will be made operational till the termination of cyclone.

 Actions Pre Cyclone 

-Check that your house’s surroundings are clear of any loose debris, garbage, loose items like lawn chairs/tables, potted plants, etc. which can become airborne and cause injury/damage.

-Trim any long hanging tree branches and large bushes.

 -In case of storm surge/flooding, please evacuate to your nearest high ground.

 -Keep a list of emergency contact numbers for your local emergency services.

 -Designate a safe area within your home.

 -Prepare an emergency kit to include: Battery Powered Portable Radio with spare batteries; Battery Powered Torch (Flashlight) with spare batteries; Fresh Drinking Water (Bottled or in a Container); Dried/Canned Non Perishable Food Stuffs; Mobile (fully charged) with universal mobile charger; First Aid Kit

 -Keep in contact and updated about the developing situation by remaining tuned into your local television station or radio station.

 -Close windows and fit shutters or plastic sheeting on all windows around your house.

 Actions In Case Evacuation is Ordered

 -Wear suitable clothes.

-Lock doors, turn off main electrical power, gas and water supplies and take along emergency kits.

-Follow the instructions of Emergency Services/District Administration. Move to high ground

Actions During Cyclone

-Stay indoors and away from windows.

-Turn off electrical supply and gas supply.

-Listen to battery powered radio to stay updated on the situation.

-If your home starts to break apart protect yourselves under mattresses, carpets/rugs, blankets or under a strong table.

-Beware that if the wind drops, don’t assume that cyclone is over, you may be in the “Eye of the Cyclone”.

-Wait for the official "all clear" from Emergency Services/District Administration.

Actions Post Cyclone

-Don’t go outside until officially advised. Listen to your radio for official updates.

-Check your home for any gas/water leaks.

-Do not use electrical appliances if your home is flooded or if you are wet.

-If you evacuated earlier do not return home until advised by Emergency Services/District Administration.

-Beware of damaged power lines, bridges, buildings, trees and don’t enter flood waters.
