The Sharjah Committee for the Federal National Council Elections has discussed the campaign regulations for candidates in all the cities and areas of the emirate.

The committee assured the banning of billboards that may affect traffic and pedestrian safety. It also emphasised on the reinforcement of the municipality’s supervisory role during the campaign by observing the numbers of billboards, the allowed sites and the nature of their content.

This was discussed at a meeting chaired by Mansour Nassar, Director-General, Legal Department, Ruler of Sharjah's Office. It was attended by directors of municipalities and committee members.

Nassar said candidates have the right to promote their campaign freely provided they respect community values and commit themselves to election regulations. Candidates, he stressed, are banned from abusing and inflaming religious and sectarian fanaticism in their campaigns.

He explained that the municipality of Sharjah will observe and supervise advertising of campaigns to ensure application of rules.

In Umm Al Quwain, the Emirate's Election Committee said it had completed technical and administrative preparations for running the FNC elections 2015.

Rashid Juma Humaid, head of the committee, held a meeting on Tuesday with media representatives to update them on the timeline of the elections and arrangements made by the committee to ensure smooth running of the elections.

He said a team of employees from both the federal and local governments would be trained to provide support services to both candidates and voters.

The number of eligible voters for the coming Federal National Council elections has risen by two-thirds from the 2011 polls.

The National Election Commission announced that 224,279 Emiratis will be able to cast their votes on October 3, up 66 percent from 135,308 in the last election.

Nationally, 67 per cent of those who can vote or stand as candidates are under the age of 40, and 48 per cent are women.

The breakdown of eligible voters by Emirate is: 90,408 from Abu Dhabi; 53,568 from Dubai; 31,766 from Sharjah; 27,455 from Ras Al Khaimah; 10,887 from Fujairah; 6,090 from Ajman; and 4,105 from Umm Al Qaiwain.
