Grandma jailed for using grandchild as drug mule

A grandmother has been thrown into prison after she made a drug mule of her 8-year-old grandson, whose mother is also imprisoned for dealing in illegal drugs.

Authorities arrested Anito Sardido, 48, after a buy-bust operation conducted on Delpan Street, in Manila’s Binondo district, netted her grandson, who sold 200 pesos (Dh17.79) worth of shabu to a police officer who posed as a buyer.

“The cops were surprised [to see the child], as they thought that they would be seeing a grownup person,” Senior Inspector Jaime Mallorca was quoted by the tabloid ‘Abante Tonite’ as saying.

The child led the cops to his widowed grandmother, who told them that she didn’t have any source of income to raise her grandson. She added that his mother was also in prison for selling shabu while his father had abandoned them.

Sardido is facing charges of violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

This child is now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
