Musician Lana Roi booted out of 'Miss Philippines' beauty pageant

Singer-songwriter Lana Roi has been disqualified from this year’s Binibining (Bb) Pilipinas, or Miss Philippines, beauty pageant for posing for a sexy magzine.

“I have no regrets joining the pageant,” she said in a recent press conference organised by Day By Day Care and Youth Foundation, a non-profit she is endorsing. “I’m happy to have been part of it.”

Born Theresa Fenger, she took up the reel name Lana Roi when she joined the girl group Eurasia, which was featured in ‘FHM’ magazine in 2010.

“I’m hurt to know that I’m being judged in the wrong way for being on ‘FHM’ where some photos from the pageant are more revealing,” she said. “It was Eurasia management’s choice at that time for us to be featured on FHM. It wasn’t me wanting to be on the magazine.”

The photo shows her wearing a one-piece performing costume, she said, which was meant to promote her group and its new album.

The management of the annual Bb Pilipinas, whose winning candidates are sent to represent the Philippines in various beauty pageants overseas, said it has a rule that automatically disqualifies a candidate who poses for a sexy magazine.

While she’s not bitter about her disqualification, as she is keen on watching the final night of Bb Pilipinas on April 14, Roi said this might be a blessing in disguise for her musical career. It must be a signal to return to her No. 1 passion: music.

Her joining the pageant was supposed to be a breather for her after she finished writing all the songs in her new album, ‘This is the Real Me’, which is due for release by the middle of this year.

Actor Paulo A wants to be like Robert de Niro

If he had his way, Filipino actor Paulo Avelino would take Robert de Niro’s place to know what makes him such a Hollywood heavyweight.

“I want to enter his mind and find out what makes him such a great actor,” the 24-year-old Avelino said, in response to a question from an entertainment writer.

Dolly Anne Carvajal, who writes a showbiz column for the ‘Philippine Daily Inquirer’, had asked him: “If you could trade places with one famous person even just for a day, who would it be and why?”

With his latest movie ‘The Bride and the Lover’ up for showing in theatres in the Philippines on May 1, Avelino is again hogging the headlines of Tuesday’s showbiz newspaper pages.

Directed by the veteran actor-filmmaker Joel Lamangan, ‘The Bride and the Lover’ also stars the more recently controversial actress Lovi Poe and the erstwhile controversial personality Hayden Kho, Jennylyn Mercado and the veteran actress-comedienne Carmi Martin.

Avelino himself became controversial last month when he offended many showbiz scribes over an uncalled for remark at the awards night of EnPress, or Entertainment Press Society Inc.

A mainstay talent of TV network ABS-CBN, Avelino had tied with Neil Ryan Sese to clinch the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in Drama Series’ award at EnPress’s Golden Screen TV Awards, and was asked to present the succeeding awards where he joked about having difficulty working as he was forced to work. He won the award for his role in the concluded drama series ‘Walang Hanggan’ ’ (No End) while Sese won it for ‘Munting Heredera’ (Little Heiress).

“Why don’t they have a sense of humour?” Avelino asked, stressing that his remark at the awards ceremony was a joke. He issued an apology, however, through his manager and all had been ironed out.

Carvajal, who herself hogged the headlines years ago over her alleged relationship with drama and action star Robin Padilla, said she was impressed with Avelino’s portrayal of a mentally disturbed lover in ABS-CBN’s ‘Walang Hanggan’ ’. “He certainly deserves his own ‘teleserye’ [TV series],” she added in her April 8 column.

Lamangan, whose award-winning films include ‘Blue Moon’ (2006), ‘Death Row’ (2000) and ‘The Flor Contemplacion Story’ (1995), among other movies, said he was confident on the talent and popularity of his actors to bring success to ‘The Bride and the Lover’.

And, if you are someone who considers the presence of controversial figures in the movies you choose to watch, take note that Poe was recently questioned by the government censors board about her dance number in a variety show where she and partner Rocco Nacino simulated in bed what appeared to be a sexual act.

Kho, on the other hand, was a cosmetic surgeon whose licence to practise medicine was revoked by government after he was suspected of uploading on the Internet footage of him having sex with two or three budding actresses, who were his girlfriends. Now a businessman, he also used to be a model.

When Carvajal asked Avelino how he would like to be remembered, he said: “As an actor who inspired others to become better human beings.”

Tuñacao beaten by Japan’s Yamanaka in WBC bantamweight title

Former Philippines flyweight champion Malcolm Tuñacao has failed to capture the bantamweight title under the World Boxing Council (WBC), as he lost to unbeaten Japanese champion Shinsuke Yamanaka in Tokyo on Monday.

According to the website www.fightnews.com, Tuñacao’s record declined 32-3-3 with 20 knockouts, as Yamanaka dropped him and was stopped at 1.57 into the 12th round.

Yamanaka’s record improved to 18-0 with 13 knockouts.

A native of Mandaue City, in the central Philippine province of Cebu, Tuñacao was a professional southpaw boxer in the flyweight division, after being a national champion several times in the amateur ranks.

He had said that it was poverty that prodded him to venture into the pro arena, hoping that he could earn more money to give his wife and three children a better future.

Nicknamed ‘Eagle Eye’, Tuñacao turned pro along with ‘kababayan’ (countryman) Randy Suico, formerly a WBC super featherweight champion, who lost to Aussie Jarrod ‘Left Jab’ Fletcher in their PABA middleweight bout in Victoria, Australia last Friday night, April 6. (PABA stands for Pan Asian Boxing Association).

Boxing news source www.eastsideboxing.com said Fletcher, 29, finished Suico on the fifth round, where the Australian caught the Filipino cleanly on numerous occasions. Suico’s trainer threw in the white towel after the fifth round.

Fletcher’s record improved to 31-9-1 with 26 knockouts while Suico’s dropped to 15-1 with 9 knockouts.
