Charges of child abuse have been filed against two teachers, who are also facing dismissal from work, in the northern Philippine province of Cagayan for humiliating a senior high school student that made him kill himself.
Teodora Dayao, the victim’s adviser, and Guidance Counselor Ailene Asucion allegedly gave John Ace Manuel, 16, a dressing down for having failed to pay his tuition fees, radio reports said.
Police Senior Inspector Pepito Mendoza, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), in the province’s Pamplona town, said the teachers called in Manuel to the office of Asuncion on April 12 where they took turns in calling him names.
Besides the child-abuse case filed against the suspects before the Department of Justice, they also are facing administrative charges before the Office of the Ombudsman.
Mendoza said that Manuel broke down in Asuncion’s office while waiting for his father, whose presence had been required by the teachers in that supposed meeting.
Apparently, this was too much for Manuel to take. He killed himself on April 29.
