A woman is facing charges of alleged child abuse and human trafficking for selling her newborn for 15,000 pesos (Dh1,347).

She was trapped in an undercover operation after authorities were tipped off by a concerned witness.

Grace Aligado, 31, was caught in Cagayan’s capital city of Tuguegarao by a team from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), which answered a call for help by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, in Region II.

The latter said it was acting on a tip from a concerned citizen from the city’s Soldiers Hill area.

Officials of NBI-Region II posed as potential buyers and approached the accused. When she agreed for the deal, they arrested her, reported tabloid Abante.

The woman, who claims to hail from the central Philippine province of Antique, and the baby are now in government custody while the NBI-Region II is trying to establish whether Ms Aligado is indeed the mother of the child.

She claimed that she gave birth to the baby at the Cagayan Valley Medical Center on December 13, and that wanted to sell her child fathered by her lover from Apayao - a landlocked province in Luzon’s Cordillera Administrative Region.
