Sri Lanka police charm and bag 'Cobra girl'

Colombo: The police found the cobra girl !

Nirosha Wimlarathna was arrested by Kollupitiya Police on Tuesday at a hotel in Bambalapitiya.

It is reported that she landed in Sri Lanka in the early hours from Thailand.

She was produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Prasanna Alwis, who ordered to release the suspect on (Sri Lankan) Rs50,000 [Dh1,463] personal bail.

Two days ago, the Colombo Fort Magistrate turned down a police request to direct the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to arrest Nirosha Wimalaratne also known as ‘the cobra girl’ when she returned to the country.

Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya had on April 4, issued a warrant for Wimalaratne’s arrest for not being present in Court to answer charges in the case where she is alleged to have had a cobra in her room at a Kollupitiya nightclub.

The Kollupitiya police informed court that the suspect had violated court orders by leaving the country and that they were unable to locate her permanent address.

Army deserter, waiter held for robbing tourists

Two suspects who stole and attempted to sell items worth around (Sri Lankan) Rs500,000 [Dh14,635] belonging to two British tourists staying at a hotel in Marawila, have been arrested by officers of the Chilaw Division intelligence unit, reports Ada Derana

POlice confiscated the stolen items and took th duo into custody on April 1. The items included laptop, a digital camera, two camera lenses, two small printers and various other maps and documents.

The suspects are reportedly an army deserter and a waiter. They allegedly stole the itmes when the tourists were away.

Kantale Police Division special bureau had received a tip-off that the suspects were preparing to sell the stolen items to a person in Kokkawila, Chilaw.

Acting on this information, the Chilaw Division intelligence unit had arrested the suspects in a raid
