Police trap speedsters hiding car plates

Hundreds of speeding drivers who have tried to cheat police cameras in Dubai over the past year by smudging their car plate numbers have been caught and made pay all their traffic fines, the emirate’s traffic police acting chief said in remarks on Sunday.

Colonel Saif Al Mazroui said 402 cars had been seized and their owners have been made to pay Dh58,733 in fines for violating traffic rules although they have tried to hide their plate number by paint and other means.

One driver was found to have painted over a digit of his car plate number, while another put a sticker on one number in a bid to avert police cameras, he said.

Another driver was found to have placed a screw inside the number “zero” to make it look ‘8’ while other drivers changed their front plates.

“They were all caught. They have thought they would get away with it but all of them have been caught,” he told the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm.

“We have seized 402 cars and made their owners pay a total 58,733 in traffic fines for violations they have committed over the past 14 months.

“They have tried to cheat the law and the police department but they were all discovered and punished.”
