10-car commuter train from NYC derails in tunnel

All the passengers on a New York City-to-Long Island commuter train that derailed in a tunnel under the East River have been safely removed. No injuries have been reported.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Marjorie Anders says the derailment happened Monday evening. The passengers were off the train in about two hours.

The 10-car Long Island Rail Road train was moving slowly as it entered the tunnel. It's unclear what caused it to derail.

Passengers in the rear five cars walked through the train and got out. Anders says another train was brought alongside for passengers in the front five cars to disembark.

The disabled train blocked one of four river tunnels. Anders says there's limited eastbound service. Westbound service into New York City has been suspended to allow trains to head east using the three remaining tunnels.
