A 27-year-old Saudi man weighing nearly 250 kg underwent a long-awaited gastric bypass surgery at a public hospital in the Gulf Kingdom and doctors expected him to lose up to 70 per cent of his weight in just six months.

A team of surgeons spent nearly an hour to perform the operation at the King Fahd Medical City in the capital Riyadh and later said it was a successful operation that will not result in any complications in the future.

"Around 80 per cent of the stomach has been removed and the patient is doing very well now. We expect him to lose 60-70 per cent of his weight in about six months," said Dr Ayed Al Qahtani, who led the operating team.

Saudi newspapers said the patient began suffering from obesity at the age of five years, adding that he was later confined to a wheel chair after he could no longer walk.
