Doctors in Saudi Arabia have removed a 4.6kg tumour from the abdomen of a 12-year-old boy in one of the rarest surgical operations in the world, the Saudi newspaper Almadina said on Tuesday.

The tumour weighed nearly a sixth of the boy’s 28kg weight and was located on the right side of the liver, it said.

“It is one of the rarest operations and it might be the first to involve the removal of a tumour of this size from a child’s body,” said Dr Awaji Al Naami, consultant surgeon at the Sabia hospital in the southwestern province of Najran.

He said the tumour had caused a big lump in the abdomen and difficulty in breathing. The patient is still in hospital and in a good condition, he added.
