A Saudi court sentenced three Saudi brothers and their sister to jail terms and ordered them lashed many times after they were found guilty of assaulting and insulting members of the Gulf kingdom’s feared religious police.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, Saudi Arabia’s most influential law enforcing agency, were on a routine patrol in the Western town of Makkah when they saw one of the three brothers with a woman.

When they tried to arrest the couple, the man and two brothers assaulted the Commission members and swore at them. They were also accused of helping the girl of fleeing the area when the religious cops tried to arrest her.

Sabq newspaper said their sister was also found guilty of lying to court and blocking the course of justice by claiming that she was with her brother not another girl.

The paper said the judge sentenced the brother caught with the girl to six months in prison and ordered him lashed 50 times. His two brothers were sentenced to three and four months and ordered lashed 25 times each while their sister was jailed one month and ordered whipped 10 times.
