7 wounded in bomb attack on bus in Philippines

Philippine police say a powerful bomb has exploded in a passenger bus and wounded at least seven people in the country's south in an attack by suspected extortion gangs.

Police Chief Superintendent Rolen Balquin says the homemade bomb exploded in the rear portion of the bus as it traveled late Saturday in Isulan town in Sultan Kudarat province. The blast damaged the bus and sparked a brief fire, but did not injure anyone aboard the vehicle.

Balquin, however, said Sunday that the force of the blast shattered the windshield of another passenger bus nearby, wounding its driver and two passengers. Four bystanders along a roadside were wounded by shrapnel from the explosion.

Armed extortion groups, including former rebels, have targeted buses with bombs in the past.
