Age gap in marriage leads to treachery: scholar

Young women should not be forced to have old husbands as this could push them to have a relationship outside marriage, a prominent Saudi Moslem scholar was reported on Monday as saying.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Saud Arab, a member of the world’s Moslem scholars league, said he was reacting to a recent call from a 20-year-old Saudi woman complaining to him about her forced marriage to a man aged 65 years.

“This means her husband is 45 years older than her and she is also his second wife…..this is unfair and a sort of oppression,” he said on his Twitter page, according to the Saudi Arabic language daily Ajel.

“I urge old men not go marry very young women…this marriage could push the woman to become sinful and indulge in acts of infidelity to her husband.”
