An African who failed to pay money for two sheep he bought from a Saudi merchant was forced to pay a part of his body — his ear.

Evoking Shakespeare’s famous play “The Merchant of Venice,” the unnamed illegal migrant in the Gulf Kingdom grabbed the two sheep from the dealer in the central town of Makkah and ran away.

“The Saudi merchant chased him and told him to pay…when he refused, he jumped on him and bit off his ear,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Al-Yaoum reported on Thursday, adding the African had been admitted to hospital.
