Bahrain election turnout dips slightly
Bahrain's elections officials say voter turnout was 67 per cent in parliamentary elections held after months of unrest between the country's majority Shiites and Sunni rulers.
It compares with 72 per cent turnout in 2006 - possibly evidence of a boycott call by some Shiite leaders in the tiny Gulf nation.
The biggest Shiite political bloc alleges that hundreds of voters were wrongly turned away. BahrainÕs justice minister, Sheik Khaled bin Ali Al Khalifa, claims just a few irregularities were found and hailed the voting as fair.
Shiites are hoping for a strong showing in the 40-seat parliament. Results are expected Sunday.
Sunni authorities have launched a wave of arrests and clampdowns against suspected Shiite dissidents.
