Bangladesh cops fire rubber bullets at protesters

Police in Dhaka have fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse dozens of stone-throwing protesters who tried to block roads in the capital.

A coalition of 18 opposition parties has called for roads to be blocked across the country Sunday to highlight calls for the restoration of a constitutional provision allowing a nonpartisan caretaker administration to oversee an upcoming national election.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government scrapped the provision last year after the supreme court ruled it unconstitutional.

Television station Ekattar TV says violence broke out in southern Dhaka where police used rubber bullets and tear gas to battle protesters.

The station says no injuries were immediately reported. Police were not immediately available for comment.

Bangladesh has a history of police violence, with opposition frequently resorting to general strikes.
