The Sheena Bora case in India is getting murkier by the day with the sad state of medical technology available with the police being exposed.

The samples of Indrani Mukherjea’s urine sent to two labs led to conflicting reports. While the report of the government run Forensic Scientific Laboratory at Kalina in Mumbai stated that the urine samples did not contain any pills, one wonders how Indrani lost consciousness. But then the better equipped Hinduja Hospital gave a report on the same sample stating that there was a drug overdose.

Indrani, who is in judicial custody even as she is admitted to the state run Byculla Women’s Hospital, had allegedly consumed some pills as an overdose leading to the reports from Hinduja Hospital stating that the levels of Benzodiazepine in Indrani’s urine sample was 2088 ng/ml which is over ten times the permissible limit.

Benzodiazepine is a drug used to sedate patients in case of anxiety and depression and the overdose of the same resulted in Indrani becoming unconscious, according to doctors.

But Indrani did open her eyes on Saturday for a short period and moved her limbs.

Dr Lahane, Dean of JJ Hospital, now says that the techniques used by the FSL, Kalina are archaic and hence the report was negative. “The Kalina lab may be using old techniques,” said Lahane.

Indrani however has not regained complete consciousness for the investigating officer Inspector General of Police Bipin Kumar Singh to take her statement.
