A Saudi convicted of killing another man during a fight a few years ago needs SR12 million (Dh12 million) to be pardoned by the victim’s relatives and avert execution in the next few day, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The relatives of Abdullah Al Ahmari, who has been on the death row for years, said they have raised only SR2 million (Dh2 wo million) of the SR14 million demanded by the victim’s family as diya (blood money).

“We appeal for all benevolent people to help us in paying the diya and save our son,” the convict’s family said in a statement carried by 'Sabq' newspaper.

The paper said Ahmari has been in jail awaiting execution in the southern town of Khamis Mushait since he was charged of killing another man during a scuffle in the city.

Under Islamic law, a killer can avert execution and be freed if pardoned by the victim’s family in return for diya, which is officially set in Saudi Arabia at SR300,000 for a Muslim victim. The victim’s relatives are allowed to demand any sum.
