Robbers using a stolen large van uprooted a cash teller machine at a bank in Saudi Arabia but fled empty handed after they were stopped by local residents, Saudi newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The thieves managed to extract the ATM out of the bank’s exterior wall in the Central town of Wadi Dawasir and tried to load it on the truck before they were surrounded by a large crowd attracted by the sound of massive machine as it hit the ground during the daring evening operation, the papers said.

“They came with a big van and parked near the bank…they asked a man who was using the teller machine to leave,” Alriyadh daily said.

“They used their van to push away that man’s car, tied the machine to ropes and extracted it out of the wall…after their attempt was foiled by the crowd, they fled the scene…police are still hunting for them.”
