Electronics blamed for high Saudi divorce rate

Saudi Arabia recorded nearly 34,000 divorce cases in 2014, one of the highest rates in the world, mainly because of the Gulf kingdom’s openness and spread of new electronic devices, according to a well-known social expert.

The divorces cases among Saudi citizens were nearly triple the marriages during that year, said Gazi Al Shammari, a family and social adviser.

“The main reasons for the high divorce rates in Saudi Arabia include social openness, the spread of advanced electronic systems, lack of awareness, negligence by spouses and interference by families in the couple’s marital life,” he said, quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily ‘Sabq’.

He said the problem could be tackled by organising ‘compulsory’ family awareness courses, the introduction of family education lessons to schools and intensifying awareness campaign by the media.
