Family Politics: Wife divorces hubby on political grounds

In a first-of-its-kind case in Egypt, a woman has moved the courts seeking divorce from her husband on political grounds.

According to Masrawy website, the 26-year-old woman is an ardent supporter of former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik while her interior designer husband supports the Muslim Brotherhood.

She alleged that the husband evades work and spends his own money making advertisement posters for the party and rallies behind Mohammed Morsi.

She confronted him and asked him to stop splurging on party issues, but he paid no heed. Later, when he learnt that she would vote for Ahmed Shafiq, he lost his cool and beat her up.

The woman, inturn demanded a divorce, but he declined. And thus, she moved the courts.

The couple has been married a little over an year.

The court adjourned the case until June 17.

Son slits mum's throat for money

An Algerian man who was rebuffed by his ageing mother after asking her for money went to the kitchen, brought a large knife and put it on her neck as she begged him not to kill her. Ignoring her pleas, he slit her throat and phoned the ambulance before he was arrested.

Doctors raced against time to save the 74-year-old woman as she had lost blood profusely at her home in the northeastern Mediterranean port of Annaba. The woman is in coma at the intensive care unit.

“The man said he was furious by his mother’s refusal to give him more money from the social aid she receives every month,” the Algerian Arabic language daily 'Al Shuruq' said.

“According to police, he slit her throat while she was begging him not to do so, saying to him ‘I’m your mother my son.”

Stab victim swore on my sister, says accused

An Asian, MH, stabbed an anonymous person after the latter allegedly abused his sister to provoke him.

The accused who frequents a restaurant in Hor Al Anz area for lunch saw the man sitting outside a house last Friday.

Picking up a conversation with him, MH learnt the victim was into immoral activities.

On questioning his acts, the victim allegedly said that he would 'bring his sister to work as a prostitute'. This angered MH to such an extent that he rushed back into the restaurant, returned with a knife and stabbed him, reported 'Emarat Al Youm'.

Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al-Mansouri, Director, General Department, Criminal Investigation Department, Dubai Police, said the victim was transferred to Rashid Hospital and the suspect arrested.
