Father chains and confines son to room for 3 years

The case of a youth, whose hands and feet were chained and who was confined in a room by his father for the past three years, has come to light in Egypt.

The man, identified as Salama Haris Mara’ai, aged 30, was put by his father in a room attached to their house in Dishna in the Qena governorate, according to the Arabic newspaper Youm7.

The young man suffered from the serious mental illness of schizophrenia which made him a danger to people around him. The youth, who was the only son of his parents, also suffered from hallucinations.

He was relieving himself in a bucket and eating his food in utensils unfit for humans. 

According to a by the Dishna Central Hospital, he needs to be treated in a mental hospital.

The father of the youth sought help from the governor of Qena in treating his only son after he become a nuisance and a danger to him and his mother and assaulted children of the neighbourhood.

The father added he was compelled to confine his son after he tried to kill him and his mother.

“I also feared that our neighbours would attack me and my son because he had assaulted their children,” said the father.

He said village children would walk behind him, throw stones and call for killing him and his son.

The father urged charitable people to help him move his son to a hospital for treatment.

“My son needs a hospital for psychiatric care and a separate room where he cannot harm others,” he said.
