Saudi Arabia’s top Islamic scholar has warned local dealers against raising the prices of their goods during the fasting month of Ramadan, saying they should fear God before embarking on such a move, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Grand Mufti Sehikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh was reacting to reports that dealers could again use the usual increase in demand for consumer goods during Ramadan and raise prices, the Arabic language daily Alriyadh said.

“I call on traders in Saudi Arabia to fear God before and during the Holy Ramadan….they should sell at reasonable prices since the country does not impose any taxes on them and trade in Saudi Arabia is free,” he told the paper.

“Dealers will commit a grave mistake when they raise the prices of goods to consumers before Ramadan without any reason…they should not exploit the opportunity at such times and should be satisfied with the security and tranquility enjoyed by our country.”

Ramadan is expected to begin in the second week of July, one of the hottest months of the year in the Arabian Peninsula. Traders in most Gulf country have been accused of using strong demand for consumer items every Ramadan and raise prices.
