Four members of an Indian family died in an early morning fire in the Muttrah area of Muscat, Oman.

The family from Kannur in the Indian state of Kerala - Ashokan P (40), a tailor, his wife Bindu (30), and their two children, Sharon (12) and Sharan (6), both students of Indian School Darsait - perished after the fire engulfed their villa, sources at the Indian embassy in Muscat told Emirates 24|7.

As it is a public holiday in Oman on Saturday, the family was sleeping late. Ashokan had managed to come out of the house after the fire started, but returned to rescue his wife and children.

Some adjacent villas also caught fire, but there was no other casualty.

Ashokan worked as a tailor in Muttrah Souq and has been living in Muscat for two decades.

Indian embassy sources said: “The family lived in a very old villa and electric short circuits are very common in Muttrah villas.”

“Another expatriate died recently due to a short circuit in the water heater,” said Sunil Kumar, a Muscat resident and social worker.
