Fresh earthquakes rock Muscat, Iran; UAE not impacted

Two separate earthquakes of medium to high intensity hit the region early this morning, impacting Muscat (Oman) and the Iran-Pakistan border.

According to the UAE's National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale was reported at 7.15am UAE time (3.15 GMT) at the Pakistan-Iran border, 591km northwest of Karachi, with another aftershock of 5.1 magnitude at 8.53am UAE time (4.53 GMT), about 23km away from the first quake (568km northwest of Karachi, Pakistan.

Iran was rocked by the quake at 7.15am UAE time on April 17, 107km east of Kash (Iran), with two separate aftershocks impacting the region.

The Gulf city closest to the epicentre is Muscat, 628km across the sea, where aftershocks of 4.9-magnitude were felt.

Both the aftershocks in Iran-Pakistan border as well as in Muscat were of 4.9 magnitude on the Richter scale, much lower in intensity than yesterday’s 7.8-magnitude quake.

No immediate reports of any damage have been received.

Additionally, while tremors from yesterday’s quake were felt across the UAE and rest of the Arab world, in addition to India, tremors from the most recent quake of this morning were not felt in the UAE.
