Friends invited to “donkey meat” meal

Five Saudi men who were invited by two friends to a meal welcomed the offer and gave their appreciation in advance without realizing it would include donkey meat. But it was until their bellies were full that they learned what they had eaten.

The five went straight to the police and filed a complaint. Police seized one Saudi host while the other, a Yemeni, is still at large.

“The five told the police their friends served them donkey meat in a big meal at their farm,” Sabq newspaper said in a report from the southern town of Samita.

It did not make clear if they enjoyed the food or if their hosts had some of it.

Reacting to the report, a prominent Saudi Islamic scholar urged court to severely punish the hosts for what he described their “shameful” act.

“I call on the judge to defame and give maximum punishment to those who did this shameful act to their friends so they will be a lesson to others,” said Sheikh Abdul Mohsen Al Obeikan, an adviser at the Saudi Royal Court.
