Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, has stressed that the GCC countries strive to achieve security and stability in the region.

In an opening speech at a Gulf Research Centre-organised forum which began last night at the University of Cambridge in the UK, Dr. Al-Zayani highlighted the importance of youth in the GCC countries.

Dr. Al Zayani renewed the commitment of the GCC countries and the international community to fully implementing the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2216 regarding the crisis in Yemen.

He also stressed the importance of efforts by regional and international forces to fight the Daesh terrorist organisation, calling for concerted efforts to eradicate the phenomenon of extremism in the world, and expressed hope that the United Nations Centre for Combating Terrorism, which was recently established and funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, would be a main contact point for the exchange of ideas and coordination of efforts to combat extremism.

The Secretary-General explained that achieving peace and stability in the region depends on responses to the challenges of terrorism and conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, giving priority to the war against terrorism and extremism.

On Gulf-Iranian relations, Al Zayani expressed the GCC countries' hope that Iran would be committed to the principles of good neighbourliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states, respect the sovereignty of states in the region, and act in accordance with international law, stressing that Iran's behaviour is one of the keys for stability of the future of the region.

The Secretary-General also stressed the importance of solving the Palestinian issue.
